INTRODUCTION

Halogen-based fire suppressing agents have been the most effective fire suppressants and widely used for flammable liquid and electric fire.
 However, their environmental problems are causing of ozone depletion in the stratosphere and global warming. As a substitution of halon, water mist is one of an effective fire suppressant for fire suppression system. Evaporative properties of water mist effectively maximize suffocating and cooling of fire, because the droplet size is less than 1,000㎛ therefore cover large surface area. Below chart shows the general fire protection capabilities of water mist, compared with the other main type of suppression technologies.

WHAT IS A WATER MIST SYSTEM ?
 A standard definition, which qualifies as a water mist fire suppression system hasn’t been established. However this system generally produce misty droplets of water with 30 to 300㎛ of volumetric mean diameters and flow rates of water mist have in order of magnitude, or more less than a conventional sprinkler system.

WHY USE A WATER MIST SYSTEM ?
 How to compare water mist systems with gaseous agent systems or compare with conventional sprinkler system? Before the used of water mist system, you have many questions about this. Specially the advantage of water mist system compare with other gaseous agent systems. The advantage of this system is non-toxic, immediately available and the lower cost etc.. And the cooling capacity and penetration of water droplets is also one of an advantage of this system. So this system will give you more contentment than most chemicals or patented mixtures.
 The water mist system is more effective for fire suppressing than new gaseous flooding agents in case of deep-seated fires. Also can apply to another field of application, such as machinery space and turbine enclosures.

The water mist spray will provide cooling of the surfaces and potentially prevent re-ignition of fire, not provided by the gaseous agent, which may occur if a concetration of gaseous agents can’t be maintained for a sufficient period of time.
 More advantages of water mist systems compare with conventional sprinkler systems, is significantly reduced flow rates of water therefore occurred less water damage at the sensitive equipment or occupancies.
 Conventional sprinkler sprays may damage high temperature equipment surfaces by the rapid cooling due to high water fluxes and large droplet diameters.
 In addition, flammable liquid spray fire and some other type of flammable liquid fire can’t be readily controlled with conventional sprinkler spray, due to splashing by spillage of the fuel which have been extinguished by misting sprays under certain conditions.
